Since many years ago, the most popular wedding ring was a plain gold band. My grandparents and my parents had such simple gold bands as wedding rings. Many doctors and nurses prefer it, because it can be kept very clean and it fits inside the tight surgical gloves. Sometimes, women choose narrow bands, while men wear broader ones.

According to a French tradition, the wedding ring has to be formed of three rings, interwoven with each other, representing faith, hope and love.

But the most inventive and strange idea, present in a few cultures like the Greek one, is to make a wedding ring composed by puzzle parts, which bind together in the shape of a ring when arranged properly. This makes it very difficult for the woman to take it off and then put it back, so it is believed to prevent cheating, or at least making it more difficult.

There is a common habit, at least in Europe, that women wear the engagement ring and the wedding ring on the same finger.

The latest fashion in wedding rings (and not only, as it can be encountered also in tatoos) is the Celtic style wedding band. The wedding band is engraved with Celtic motives, and I must admit I find them very appealing, although thay might have a deeper signification only for Irish brides.
